Al Jahili Fort
Al Jahili Fort is a fascinating landmark that echoes the philosophy, culture and heritage of Abu Dhabi. This expansive fort is located in the lush oasis city of Al Ain, standing as a testament to the region's legacy. Constructed in the 1890s on the command of Sheikh Zayed bin Khalifa Al Nahyan - the first president of the UAE - it was designed as a residence for the ruling Al Nahyan family. Crafted from sun-dried mud brick, Al Jahili Fort has undergone a journey of preservation and revival. Early restoration efforts began in 1985, followed by a comprehensive rehabilitation undertaken by the Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi between 2007 and 2008.
Today, Al Jahili Fort has transformed into a thriving cultural hub which is popular with tourists.
Inside the historic walls of Al Jahili Fort, you'll find a temporary exhibition gallery and a dedicated showcase honouring Sir Wilfred Thesiger. A renowned explorer, writer and photographer, Thesiger's adventures across the vast Rub' al Khali desert come to life within these walls.
